The Great Lakes

  • The Great Lakes of Africa are some of the largest and most ecologically diverse freshwater systems on earth. They are located in 9 countries in East and Central Africa.
  • 8 out of 15 lakes are ranked as "Great Lakes" based on their size and depth. Lake Victoria, between Uganda to the west and Tanzania and Kenya to the east is the 2nd largest freshwater lake on the planet, and Lake Taganayika, located on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, is one of the deepest.
  • Due to pollution, introduction of non-native fish, and over-fishing have resulted in the Great Lakes being ranked as one of the world's most endangered water systems.
